Tommy FH Ayres Spring Stand Rocking Horse RARE

Tommy is an F H Ayres Spring Stand rocking horse.  The spring stand rocking horse was first introduced in 1895 when a patent was applied for, and this was granted in 1896.  It consists of metal springs replacing the more normal wooden pillars, and would have been made alongside their other hobby horses up until around World War I.  The metal springs were designed to provide an oscillating movement when the horse was rocked, `by these means an action graceful and natural whilst free from unpleasant jerks can be imparted to the body, with a steady support'.

Tommy has had his overpaint removed to reveal the original paint which was in good condition and which required little enhancement.  He retains all the signs associated with his life as a well loved horse, including wear to the top of his neck and beautiful craquelure to the gesso in places.  This craquelure cannot be faked and is a sign of an original condition horse.  He has been given new hair and tack which has been aged to complement the originality of the horse.  The stand has been stripped and checked, given a french polish and waxed.  He can be put back to gentle use by a new family.
